2013 Riserva Famiglia Cabernet Franc
The “Riserva Famiglia” title is only given to wines produced in the best vintage years which have passed a rigorous tasting panel. Made in the traditional appassimento style, vine dried for 4 weeks past traditional harvest dates and then rack dried in a single layer for 26 days. Dried in an ambient environment with forced air circulation to allow the fruit to slowly dry. Small batch fermented and aged in french oak for 2 years.
This appassimento style Cabernet Franc is unique among reds from the 2013 vintage, where only a select few premium wines were produced. The secret to this one lies in the fact that the grapes were dried prior to vinification which allowed for an increase in ripeness and the ability to produce a profound red wine. It pours a deep garnet colour which hints at the tertiary development and rustic characteristics that await. The intensely aromatic and complex nose opens with a sense of tobacco, dried black plum, vanilla, forest floor, fig, preserved blackcurrant and toffee which continue to develop with time in the glass. The palate is dense yet extremely soft, presenting silky tannins and balanced mouthfeel with a perfect spine of acidity. Flavours share similarities to the nose but give impressions of sweet oak, black tea, blackberry leaf, clove and toast which ride along with the wines long and smooth finish. Despite this wine’s long projected lifespan, it is a joy to taste now after at least an hour in a decanter and served alongside foods that are rich in protein, acid and salt as they soften the wine’s tannins. Think hearty and savoury dishes that utilize roast lamb, portobello mushrooms and rosemary or simply enjoy with your favorite hard cheeses.
