Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario- Pillitteri Estates Winery’s 2010 Appassimento Cabernet Franc has won ‘Red Wine of the Year’ and the Appassimento Red Award. This is the second time in three years that Pillitteri has won ‘Red Wine of the Year’. Pillitteri also won in 2013 for the 2010 Exclamation Cabernet Franc.

The Ontario Wine Awards, established in 1995, recognizes VQA wines for their quality, distinction and brilliance while setting industry standards of excellence and promoting the future for Ontario wines. The Ontario Wine Awards recognizes VQA varietal quality in 25 different categories and acknowledge winners in Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medal levels as well as honouring distinctive awards such as ‘Red Wine of the Year’.

The ceremony was held Friday, May 8th at Queen’s Landing in Niagara-on-the-Lake. With more than 70 wineries and 500 wine submissions, each entry was assessed blindly by panels of accredited wine judges from the wine writing and teaching community. The criteria for judging the wine not only involves having an appreciation for wine, but also knowledge and expertise of wines from the Ontario region.
